Astronaut Christmas Cards

Most astronauts look ready for everything. This one looks ready for nothing in particular, shoulders down, Santa hat on the helmet, floating in the dark like the season found them mid-shift and they decided that was fine. This is a holiday greeting card.

The card works because it breaks something. We picture astronauts as serious by necessity: strapped in, mission-critical, built for pressure. This one is just present. Not performing importance, not bracing for anything. That posture is the whole personality, and it lands before anyone can explain why.

There is also something genuinely funny about the holiday reaching all the way up there. No white Christmas in orbit. Just the black of space, a scatter of stars, and the same December everyone else is having, from a different angle. Christmas finds you wherever you are. That is either a comfort or a joke, maybe both.

For the space person in someone's life, for the teacher with a solar system on the wall, for anyone who finds that posture funny and a little familiar, the image does the work before a word is written. Cards are 4 x 5.5 inches, folded, blank inside.

Some cards ask you to feel the right thing. This one just shows up, hat on, and lets you figure out what that means.
