"HO HO HOLY SHIT / WHAT A YEAR", big red slab capitals, slightly weathered, exactly as loud as the sentiment deserves. No illustration. No hedging. Just the thing everyone kept almost saying, finally in type bold enough to mean it.

That is what makes handing one across a desk work. Not the joke exactly, the acknowledgment underneath it. Someone else felt it too, and this is how they said so.

The holidays do something useful: they give everyone permission to exhale. The year ends, things slow down briefly, and that pause is easier to share when there is something to hand a person instead of a speech.
