pug-christmas-card-set-60454
Brindle Pug Christmas Cards

We stopped when we saw this one. A brindle pug, chest up, head tilted just slightly, wearing a pointed lace collar with two small cream tassels at the throat, painted with the kind of seriousness usually reserved for people who had done something worth commemorating. No winking. No cartoon softness. Just a dog, fully committed to the portrait. These are Christmas cards, and they carry that face into every envelope.

That's what gets you. The realism of it. He isn't asking you to find him cute. He just is, and something about that is immediately, completely alive.

The image started as a chromolithograph by Frederick Dielman, published by L. Prang and Company of Boston in the latter half of the 19th century. Archived under the title Uncle Toby. Whatever Dielman intended, what landed was a dog dressed for an occasion he apparently took seriously.

Most Christmas cards don't make anyone feel anything. They go on the mantle and then they go away. This one is a small bet against that, that the person opening the envelope will stop, actually look, and feel something quick and real. That bet only pays off for a certain kind of recipient. You probably already know if yours is one.

Set of 24 folded cards, 4 x 5.5 inches, printed on 100 lb smooth cardstock with 24 white envelopes included. One design throughout. "Merry Christmas" in dark script across the top, the pug below it, looking out at whoever opens it like he belongs there.

The matching card, a cat in a ruff, same series, is also available if the pug needs company.

Some cards just sit there.
